Berlin Info

Being not from Berlin myself, though visiting often, I am not the best person giving you some insider tips on where to go and what to do. Instead of my touristy tips, a few very gentle people like Markus Raab (THANKS, Markus!) helped collecting places to go to. Furthermore you can visit our Foursquare list, where recommendations for bars, cafes, restaurants etc will be collected.

Huge thanks to (twitter: derraab text: Markus Raab) for adding a lot of great stuff here.

Special Events

Before I start listing activities and places in the city, please don’t hesitate to check out this year’s beyond tellerrand Side Events with fantastic, free events on November 7th and during the conference days.

Activities

Berlin consists of twelve boroughs. Each of them is made up of several localities. Each of these areas has it’s own characteristic but the most famous ones, like Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg and Neukölln – are all quite busy during the day and even more important: also during the night. beyond tellerrand Berlin takes place in Mitte, so let’s just take a quick walk around Mitte.

The Admiralspalast, the venue for beyond tellerrand, is located in Mitte on the famous Friedrichstraße. I recommend to take some time and visit Checkpoint Charlie, see parts of the Berlin Wall and walk to the Brandenburger Tor with the Holocaust Memorial and Reichstag almost next to it. A longer walk back on Unter den Linden, passing the Humbold University and the Bebelplatz. Only about 10 minutes away, you reach the Museumsinsel, which is always worth a visit.

If you’re not into walking and sightseeing, you could just visit the Hackesche Höfe and the streets around it to hang out, eat, or do some shopping. Later in the evening, check out Eschloraque Rümschrümp, just to see a little of the old and still “cool” Mitte. You could even buy some comics right next to it. You can also take the route back using the Oranienburger Straße, seeing the New Synagoge or visit an exhibition in the Postfuhramt. And if you’re into bunkers and art (who’s not ;) ), you should try to get a date at the Boros Bunker.

Nothing of all this fits your preferred way of spending the day and you want to hang out with your laptop? Then check Sankt Oberholz at the Rosentaler Platz. And if you need a late night drink, you can crash with Dave Lombardo at Zionskirchplatz, which is right next to Prenzlauer Berg.

Obviously Berlin is way too big to tell you everything about the city, all the places worth visiting, all the restaurants, clubs, bars, museums and cafés it offers and all the details just with a few words on this page. But if you find the time, here are some good starting points for your own adventures in other localities:

For all your trips: Berlin is very accessible by bike. One recommendation is to rent a bike if the weather is nice. The public transportation system is almost everywhere all the time, but check out the last train leaving for you ride home on weekdays. If you go by taxi, just tell the driver you need a receipt before you start. Some say this ensures the shortest way home. ;)

Hotels

Berlin is a big city. Therefore you have got plenty of options, where to stay. And compared to other cities of this size, Berlin seems to be pretty affordable as well. The few hotels I list below are only based on distance to the Admiralspalast, our venue for the conference. They are not based oncheapest price or on recommendations from someone who stayed there. That said, if you stay in one of those hotels – or others not on the list – recommendations from you help to give recommendations to new people next year. So, don't hesitate and send me an email with feedback about your stay in Berlin.

If you book a hotel room, it won't harm to mention, you are attending beyond tellerrand. Even if we don't have any good rates for you up to now, mentioning the event might give us the chance to deal something out in upcoming years. Thanks.

Maritim proArte Hotel Berlin

The Maritim proArte Hotel Berlin is our speaker and team hotel since the beginning. It is only about 200 metres from the venue away and I love their breakfast buffet. Rooms are good and a sauna and pool is available to relax before you attend beyond tellerrand (or after?) ;)

Contact details:

NH Collection Berlin Mitte

Though our Hotel in Düsseldorf usually is an NH, in Berlin we don't use it. I heard many good thing of the NH Collection on Friedrichstraße from people who have stayed there. It is super close to the conference venue.

Contact details:

Meliá Berlin

I only used a Meliá once inLondon, so I can't really tell you anything about this one, accept that my parents in law have stayed in it in 2015 and they said it is a good hotel. As well the the hotels above, it is on Friedrichsstraße and very close to the Admiralspalast.

Contact Details:

Eurostars Berlin

This is the hotel I can say least about. Never been there and never got feedback how it is. It is also very close to the event venue and has good ratings. I once spoke to them on the phone and they have beenvery nice during this conversation … but well, that is there job, isn't it?

Contact details:

As soon as we get more recommendations, we are adding those to this list.
