A New Chapter – The New beyond tellerrand Website Is Live!

You might already have noticed it, when reading these lines, well if you don’t read this in an RSS reader. Yes, yesterday was a special day. So is today, exactly a week before the – for now – last beyond tellerrand in Berlin, as I am still in awe with this wonderful feedback that we receive for the new website. But let me start from the front …

When I started beyond tellerrand back in 2010 – with the first event in 2011 – I built a small website, just enough to show one event at a time.

Version 1, 2011–2015

But after that first edition, the response to the events was so incredibly wonderful that I couldn’t stop there. Instead of making Düsseldorf bigger (as many people suggested), I decided to take the show to Berlin and start a second edition() and a third one later in Munich.) That was exactly 11 years ago, on November 4th and 5th, 2014.

Suddenly, I needed a site that could do more — one that could show multiple events, let people explore upcoming and past shows, and give space for all the little ideas that make beyond tellerrand what it is.

The person who had to make all that possible: Bastian Allgeier. We launched version 2 in January 2015 and a lot of the things we needed back then and which you can read about in the blog post when launching still is needed for the new site – and more. Oh, and surely the old sites (and now the new one) run on Kirby, and while I had plenty of ideas for typefaces and layout, Basti was the one who truly brought it to life.

The site you’ve known until today has done its job well — clear, functional, and reliable. But already in late 2019, I started thinking it was time for something new. Something that better reflected the warm, friendly, and cozy spirit of beyond tellerrand.

Then came 2020… and we all know what happened next. The pandemic changed everything – especially for events – and that redesign took a back seat. (If you’d like to see the lovely film Andreas and Stefan made about that time, just email me and I’ll share the link.)

Version 3 of the website from 2025–????
Version 3, 2015–????

Fast forward to late 2023, when I reached out to my friend Mike Kus. You might remember him from his talks at beyond tellerrand and the stunning design work he did for the Berlin 2023 show. Mike created the base design for the new website, and once again, Bastian took that and turned it into something that works beautifully.

I also had to make a decision about typefaces and pairings and while I am usually loving to play with those, this time I thought, that also for this task I wanted to ask someone. Sure enough Oliver Schöndorfer was instantly in for it and recorded a very lovely and extensive video in which he compared and explained three different scenarios.

So yes – the new beyond tellerrand website is live!

We previewed it last week with the Friends of beyond tellerrand, and the feedback has been wonderful so far. There are many new features and details to explore, but instead of me listing them all … why don’t play around with it and you see for yourself?

I plan to host a little launch show together with Mike, Bastian and Oliver soon, but since beyond tellerrand Berlin is just around the corner, that will have to wait a bit – tickets still available … you should join us!

For now, a massive thank you to Bastian Allgeier, Mike Kus and Oliver Schöndorfer for their brilliant input and work, and also to Keir Whitaker for his early input, opinions and ideas. You all rock.

And now, ladies and gentlemen…
