Video: Lucy Blakiston – Shit You Should Care About
At beyond tellerrand Berlin 2025, we had one of those rare moments, when a person is interviewing another person. I am usually sceptical and fear that sometimes the audience is excluded, when the two on stage start a conersation rather than taking the audience on a journey. I think Sacha Judd Lucy Blakiston showed how it could be done nicely.

Sacha spoke with Lucy about building Shit You Should Care About as an independent news platform rooted in writing, trust, and community. What began as a university side project grew into a global audience. Without ads, without chasing trends, and without giving control to platforms.
Their conversation touched on newsletters as a form of independence, resisting influencer culture, learning real digital skills through fandom, and the emotional labour of being “always on.” Lucy shared why she prioritises clarity over outrage, humour over despair, and people over metrics, while remaining openly critical of the platforms she still relies on.
It was a lovely, funny, and thoughtful reminder that meaningful work on the internet often comes from staying small, staying human, and choosing values over scale.
