Lunch-Break Session: Web Monetization – PPK
PPK is back. This time as part of the exhibition and of Interledger Foundation, teaching you about Web Monetization and what it is and how it works. Sounds exciting? Read on to know what he is going to speak about.
Description of PPK’s talk:
Web Monetization
Web Monetization, created by the Interledger Foundation, allows automated payments from site visitor to site owner. A site owner creates a wallet (sort of a bank account) that has a payment pointer (the URL of their wallet) and adds a tag with the payment pointer to their site. If a site visitor has their own wallet, they automatically pay the site owner. They can also give an extra tip if they feel the site is worth it.
This payment is initiated by the visitor, and not by the website. Each visitor can set their monthly total payment to all Web Monetized sites they visit combined, and they can also block certain sites from getting paid.
Thus the website owner has no say over the amount being paid by individual visitors. What they can do is listen to the monetization event to find out if they're getting paid at all, and at what rate, and react accordingly, for instance by hiding ads or showing extra content. This is up to the website owner - you don't have to do anything if you don't want to.
A draft Web Monetization standard is currently under discussion in W3C's Web Incubator Community Group. Igalia is creating a native Chromium implementation that a few Chromium engineers have agreed to implement behind a flag as an experiment. Thus, a test implementation may be rolled out in 2024. You can find more information at webmonetization.org/docs.
PPK will be around all day to talk about Web Monetization and will also be giving a short talk in one of the breaks.
