“Possibilities” with Bianca Berning and Yves Peters

This time my dear guests are Bianca Berning and Yves Peters, known for their work in the typographic bubble, but not only that. Yves spoke twice at beyond tellerrand (actually at the very first one in 2011 also) and I invited Bianca to one of the shows in 2020 which – as we all know – are postponed to this year (well, hopefully!). Join us for talks and conversation about all the possibilities we have as designers, developers and also typographers.

VFWTF?

In 2016, it was announced that OpenType Font Variations, better known as variable fonts, would be added to the OpenType specification. Since then many type designers have created hundreds of variable fonts. The designs have been both experimental and highly functional, testing not only the boundaries of the technology but also improving web performance.

Bianca’s presentation will explore the functional and creative possibilities of variable font technology and will illustrate how this area of type design has developed over the past four years.

About Bianca Berning

Bianca Berning

Bianca is a designer and engineer based at the intersection of typography, type design and technology.

She is a Creative Director at typeface design studio Dalton Maag and active member of Alphabettes, Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI) and the Unicode Consortium.

The Keyboard is Your Enemy

The computer keyboard is your enemy. It only shows a fraction of the possibilities of contemporary fonts. Yves explains the roots of the problem — spoiler: it’s good old sexism—and takes you on a discovery trip to help you unlock the full potential of digital typography.

About Yves Peters

Yves Peters

Yves Peters is a graphic designer / rock drummer / father of three who tries to be critical about typography without coming across as a snob. Previously a columnist for Typographer.org and editor-in-chief of The FontFeed, he currently divides his time between teaching at the Communication, Media and Design department of Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, and publishing at Adobe Create and writing for a variety of type foundries, weaving pop culture and design trends into foundational typographic stories. His ability to identify most typefaces on sight is utterly useless in daily life.
